How to Choose Between Open-Cell Spray Foam vs. Closed-Cell Spray Foam

by | Apr 9, 2021 | Blogs, General Info (Material), Material, Rig Support

Finding the Right Foam for Your Portable Spray Foam Equipment

When determining which type of polyurethane spray foam insulation to install, careful consideration should be placed on which type of cell is appropriate for the application, whether open-cell spray foam or closed-cell spray foam. SprayWorks Equipment offers portable spray foam equipment that is designed to accommodate both open-cell spray foam insulation and closed-cell spray foam insulation, giving our customers true versatility when it comes to performing essential work.

There is no difference in quality between closed-cell spray foam insulation and open-cell spray foam insulation, as one is not โ€œbetterโ€ than the other; however, the varying physical properties of the two types of insulation mean that either open-cell or closed-cell foam may be preferable in a given situation depending on where the spray foam is being applied.

When the foam is applied, โ€œcellsโ€ form as the foam expands and cures, and whether air remains trapped inside these cells determines if the foam is considered open or closed cell.

Open-Cell Spray Foam Insulation

Open-cell spray polyurethane foam works best in interior projects, as itโ€™s less dense and requires less material to cover an area. Gas is not trapped in the cells during application, leaving openings in the structure of the foam, in which other cells can connect and interlock, and these openings are filled with air from the surrounding environment.

Additionally, open-cell spray foams are porous, so they arenโ€™t water-resistant rendering them useful above grade or where moisture isnโ€™t likely. However, they do enhance sound deadening on interior walls and generally have an R-value of 4.3 at one inch of foam.

Closed Cell Spray Foam Insulation

Closed-cell spray foam is comprised of tiny bubbles of gas that are suspended during application and curing. The trapped gas from the propelling agent adds an extra layer of insulation, making the typical R-value at one inch around 6.0. Closed-cell foam works in both interior and exterior applicationsย  and can increase the structural strength of the wall being insulated.

The strength and reinforced nature of the bubbles allow the closed-cell foam to resist water and retard vapors. However, because of the structure of the foam, it is denser, making it require more material to cover the area.

FAQs About Closed-Cell and Open-Cell Spray Foam Insulation

Are you considering utilizing open- or closed-cell spray foam insulation for your next project? If so, review these common questions to learn more before you begin.

How much does closed-cell and open-cell spray foam cost?

Material costs vary depending on geographic location.ย However, materials are sold as a โ€œset,โ€ generally by weight, where the standard dual liquids are packed individually in 55-gallon drums, for a total of 1,000 lb when combined as a set.

To determine a specific price for your project, you should contact a spray foam representative who can assist you in calculating how much material you will need and whether open-cell spray foam or closed-cell spray foam is the best option for your needs.

Is closed-cell spray foam more ideal than open-cell spray foam insulation?

Not necessarily. It truly depends on your project, and where the spray foam will be applied. Open-cell spray foam has a different structural makeup and therefore has different uses and benefits than closed-cell insulation. Ultimately, you should select the insulation that provides the best results for your specific goals. Be sure to contact our team with any questions.

What equipment do I need to install closed-cell and open-cell spray foam insulation?

Whether youโ€™re working with open-cell spray foam or closed-cell spray foam, youโ€™ll need professional equipment to efficiently complete your project. So, depending on the application, equipment required can include:

How far in advance do I need to install closed-cell spray foam before I close off the wall? Is the length of time different for open-cell foam?

The amount of time that it takes for spray foam to cure depends on the ventilation of the room, and the process can be followed for both open-cell and closed-cell insulation.

With that in mind, a well-ventilated area only requires a few minutes to cure, while a poorly ventilated room may need up to 24 hours for the closed-cell or open-cell spray foam to fully dry. Once completely cured, the wall can then be closed off.

Are closed- and open-cell spray foams toxic?

When fully cured, both open- and closed-cell spray foam insulation is nontoxic. However, while applying the insulation, careful steps must be taken by using proper protective gear to prevent contact and the inhalation of chemicals. OSHA has very specific guidelines on how PPE should be used.

What types of projects require closed-cell spray foam or open-cell spray foam insulation?

Closed-cell insulation works best in both interior and exterior projects where you need to increase structural strength and resist moisture. Examples include roofing, residential and commercial insulation in cold climates, below-grade applications, crawl spaces, and basement walls.

On the other hand, open-cell spray foam insulation is optimal for applications on exterior walls, in attics, and in between floors.
