How to Select a Polyurethane Spray Gun

Spray polyurethane foam is an essential component used by the manufacturing and construction industries. The key to multi-tasking, spray foam is used as insulation across a variety of applications, including walls, roofs, and ceilings, and is even used in industrial settings between pipe fittings or in climate controlled environments. The spray foam formula can be altered to suit different uses, depending on the needs of the application.

Specialized equipment and training are required when using spray polyurethane foam in order to ensure accurate application. One of the most important pieces of equipment needed is a high quality polyurethane spray gun, which is used to apply the foam to the wall or other cavity. The formula for the spray foam is mixed in the chamber of the spray gun, creating the right reaction of isocyanate and resin materials for the necessary application.

Polyurethane Spray Gun Options

If you want to know how to select the best spray gun for your next spray foam insulation or polyurea coating project, you first need to consider the project you’re working on, and the different options available for each gun. Graco spray guns and PMC spray guns are two of the most popular brands, each having their own unique benefits.

Purge

There are three different types of purge or mixing styles available in industrial spray guns:

  • Air Purge – Simple single designated port design relies primarily on pressure for atomizing. When materials are not being sprayed, uses a blast of compressed air to keep the mixing chamber clean. The most widely available design on the market and support both fan and round spray patterns.
  • Mechanical – Robust internal mixing design requires more wear parts, but delivers the widest range of output to mix ratio. Cleans the mixing chamber with a steel rod that actually works as an on/off valve when actuated. Commonly used in both fan and round patterns for both coatings and spray foam insulation.
  • Liquid – same principle as the air purge with an added liquid shot cleaner into the chamber with each trigger pull, to minimize mixing chamber build-up.

The mixing chamber must be kept clean in order to ensure consistent sprays and to keep the correct formula of materials.

Size

Mixing chambers on both the PMC spray guns and Graco spray guns should be suited to the size of the job you need to do. Obviously, the bigger the chamber the more material applied during spray time. Also, the newcomer to the market PMC spray guns comes complete with a quality polyurethane spray gun and an extension pole, granting you 10 feet of reach without the need for scaffolding or other assistance.

Selecting a polyurethane spray gun doesn’t have to be difficult if you take the best brands into consideration, along with the job you need to complete.

  1. Hi,
The paint sprays you mentione, Which paint sperays better for me?
With which I can paint my house, furniture and other myself. It would be great for me if you could tell me a little bit Please?

    • These spray guns are intended for insulation. Graco does have a line of paint spray guns though. If you check out their website, they have a list of vendors. Best of luck!

  2. Wow, I did not realize that there was so much to look into when choosing these kinds of foam guns. However, I do agree that size is a big thing to keep in mind. After all, the size of your project will determine the kind of spay foam gun that you need to use.
